When it comes to Internet Security we need to look at the broader picture. July 27, 2010 Nick I think as computer users we expect a lot from our security products. How could you not when these companies are practically promising you the moon on a silver platter? if McAfee and companies like McAfee had one true fault, it would be the over marketing and setting expectations they will easily fall short of. McAfee will never block all viruses. McAfee will not prevent every hacking attempt nor will it clean that fake antivirus that installed itself on your PC. McAfee is simply a tool and not a solution. Consider McAfee more like the Robin to your Batman or the Ren to your Stimpy. Once we've established proper expectations of a product, then we can review it for what it is. So how awesome of a sidekick is McAfee? Actually...Pretty awesome at a very fair price.
Because i'm a customer of Bank of America I was able to get a 2 year McAfee Internet Security (3-user) 2010 subscription for around $27 (wow!!). I was previous using Microsoft's solution Microsoft Security Essentials as a means to help protect my PC and the rather mind-bendingly complex Outpost Firewall in which I have a lifetime subscription. McAfee seemed like a more cohesive solution and after reading PC Mag's glowing review I decided that maybe i'll give it a try. Unfortunately this where McAfee stumbled hard. It installed fine, however it installed the 2009 version and not the new shiny, pretty interface that I saw on the screenshots. So I contact McAfee's customer service and whined, but basically they told me i'll get the update software randomly. Can't say I was impressed considering the 2010 version was 6 months old and they're still defaulting installation to the 2009 version. After much research and screwing around, I was able to reinstall McAfee to the new interface. Yay!
The interface is very clean, very professional and the icon presents itself much better in the system tray. System has not experienced any slow down since installation. I threw a few EICAR viruses at it to make sure it was working and even visited a few naughty sides to confirm Site Advisor was in gear. I attached the spam filter to Outlook (which also created a spam folder in gmail) and it's been doing a good job. Overall this piece of software will perform like it should on a relatively clean machine. Trying to force this software into an infected machine, or a machine that's had years of software gunk buildup will most likely cause less than desirable results. You as a PC owner need to take care of your computer just as you would take care of your car, you shouldn't expect complex software to run without a hitch if your PC is slow and unhealthy.
Firewall, Antivirus, Antispyware, Antispam and online backup of important documents is what McAfee advertises and it works. I don't expect McAfee to karate chop every virus I run into. Common sense should keep 99% of viruses out of my machine and I simply expect McAfee to cover that 1% chance (or at least give me warning of a pending invasion so I can put it in safe mode and do the cleaning that needs to be done). People who read one star reviews need to understand that very few pieces of software truly deserve a one star because even if McAfee causes problems during installation, or perhaps it didn't block that nasty virus, it is doing some things right at any given time and with a little work and patience it can become your sidekick too.
Quick and easy July 24, 2010 Matthew Smith (TN USA) The title really says it all. You get a good, name brand product that is easy to install and navigate. I got this product to potentially install on my mother's and grandmother's computer, and so I wanted something that would be very easy to set up and put on a schedule that would not need very much user input, and this product fit the bill perfectly. Once I had it installed it was a breeze to go in and set up the scheduled tasks so that the users wouldn't need to do much at all. With no more than a few maintenance tasks to perform every now and again this product pretty much runs itself, but it on the other hand it also has the ability to get as complex as a user might want it as well, and the versatility of the product is what I really liked about it.
I also found the protection to be all I needed to meet my needs, but with that said the computers I have this protection set up on are not as heavily used as some others. My protection needs are quite limited since neither computers are downloading lots of information from potentially questionable sources, so as to the utility of the protection I am not the best authority. With that said I found the protection to more than meet my needs.
Does not work with multi-core systems and no support July 23, 2010 Gustavo Orellana I have been using McAfee for years and had always been happy with it until now. Their software does not work correctly on Multi-core PC's and Windows 7. It also uses up licences for the same PC! It is currently reporting my multi-core PC as three different PCs.
Real rating for this software should be NEGATIVE 10 STARS!
Technical support, once one of the best, is now the worst. They don't understand what the problems are or what to do about them, all they want to do is connect remotely to your machine, and once they do, they go through the same steps that I had already done and reported to them I had. Never did receive a satisfactory answer from them, nor would they elevate my complain past the overseas group.
The first step in getting technical support is to run an application from them that is called the virtual technician, when it reports that it didn't find anything wrong and you click on the "proceed" button to send them an email it just starts again and will not let you do anything else.
It has also created some problems with my MS Office software, it is not compatible with Outlook 2010, and causes erratic behavior with Internet Explorer 8.
I do not recomend this software at all, and will not recomend it to my clients from this point on.
Pray you don't need customer service July 17, 2010 Eddie Reader (The OC) I had a problem activating my preinstalled license provided by Dell when I bought a new laptop. Dell customer service referred me to McAfee customer service. Mc has outsourced their CS, no big surprise there. I had to call three times before I got someone I could understand. The person insisted that they had to take remote control of my computer in order to help me. I reluctantly agreed. This person proceeded to install two programs in front of my very eyes over my verbal objection on the phone. One was Google Tool Bar which I don't like but no big deal. The other program was a big problem. This was a free trial version of something call RegMechanic. The person proceeded to perform a scan and claimed to have identified 437 problems of which 47 were critical. This was a brand new computer. This person told me I needed to buy this program so I could clean up my computer before activating my security software. I turned the computer off to sever the connection. I spent 3 hours researching the items this program had identified. None were of any concern what so ever. I deleted the program. I went immediately to Amazon and ordered Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and emailed a harsh email to Dell customer service. I am a relatively knowledgeable computer user and I have never had such a bad experience with any customer service, outsourced or not. If you have no problems with this program it may be worthy of some of the other reviews here but if you need customer service GOOD LUCK. I have used Kaspersky for several years and although it is annoying as any security software the slows you down screwing up your computer I have not had one single problem with viruses or other malware. I was looking forward to trying out McAfee just to stay informed. Now I will stick with Ski and will never consider McAfee again preinstalled or not.
I do not trust this software to protect my computers July 15, 2010 JC Bought this software (for 3 PCs) in May, 2010 and installed on 2 PCs right away without any problem. Tried to install it on the 3rd PC two months later and activation was denied. Logged into my account and found an unknown PC was using one license. Fortunately, I could remove that unknown PC and free up the license for my 3rd PC. Problem is that you need 3 things to activate the software: Software Key, Account Name and Password. I am absolutely sure I did not give my account name and password to anybody. Packaging of the software looked brand new. Somehow, somebody was able to obtain the Software Key and bypass the account verification to activate the software. If this software has a flaw which allows people to bypass the account verification, who knows how many other flaws it has and how can I trust it to protect my PCs. I am seeking other anti-virus software.
