Upgrade to Windows 7

All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to buy an upgrade license.

1. Choose your edition of Windows 7
Explore key features and choose the edition that's best for you. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.

2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7
In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.

3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running
How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.

  • Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.

  • Windows XP (or any other operating system)
Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider.

More work, more play, and more of everything in between. Click to enlarge.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing special   July 30, 2010
Stan Matofu (McKinney, TX)
The biggest advantage I found is the system security when I am being asked about password before something significant is done to the system.

Except security, there is nothing special about Windows 7. None of the new features make a large difference in every day use. Many things are once again moved around just to confuse previous version users. Of course, now we have the "best" reincarnation of the Start Menu and TaskBar, but I am used to it: every new Windows version has the "best" and "improved" Start Menu and Task Bar.

Things that I would like to see in a 5-start/perfect OS:
1. Start in less than 10 seconds,
2. Shutdown < 2 seconds,
3. Virus-proof system without anti-virus software,
4. Some standard solutions for hardware video acceleration so video plays well on all new computers,
5. Standard data encryption,
6. Sharing user profile between computers over the Internet,
7. Maybe, OS should include optional software for most popular tasks: email, photo management, simple editor with spelling, spreadsheet etc,
8. Ability to switch system language,
9. Simpler file/folder security,
10. Improved practical usability of OS included tools, for example,
a) the snipping tool should automatically save screen shots,
b) sound record should not require to save before playing etc,

5 out of 5 stars worth every penny!   July 30, 2010

I have used Vista for 10 months and decided to upgrade to Windows 7, oh the ease of the new product. Much easier to use than Vista, and it didn't take me but 3 weeks to figure this out. If you are on the fence about upgrading, do the upgrade!! It will be worth every penny.

1 out of 5 stars A Pile of Junk   July 30, 2010

I am migrating from XP. Windows 7 is crap at best. I bought a new computer with Windows 7. I plugged in my external hard drive from Western Digital to transfer my data. Lo and behold, Windows 7 doesn't recognize my drive. After searching the Internet, I find LOTS of people having the same problem. The most basic things just don't work. The interface may be fancy but the underlying system is not ready for production use by anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Windows   July 25, 2010

I have used various Operating Systems from Microsoft Windows, beginning with DOS through all the operating systems since.
I use this Microsoft Win 7 Home Premium every day and found it very easy to switch over from Vista. I was able to retain all of my documents & Programs I was running on Vista. This is the best OS that Microsoft has put out. I would recommend it to the beginner because it is so easy to use. I also purchased the books for Win 7. They are a great help.

4 out of 5 stars Windows 7 upgrade   July 24, 2010
C. A. Howson
Update instructions were clear and accurate for the most part. However, it's requirement that Vista be updated to the most current version before upgrade would proceed made the process take the better part of two days ... results were as advertised and the computer is must more stable and responsive.
