 More features, slightly better performance, but it's still Office. September 9, 2010

I've been using this for a few months now and it's grown on me. At first I didn't notice much difference but after going back and forth between the old and new iterations, I can certainly see the improved performance. For starters, Office 2008 does not run under Rosetta, the software that runs on Intel Macs that allows it to run some older PPC apps. This alone makes a noticeable difference in that Office is no longer as much of a processor hog.
Once thing that confuses me is WHY MS thought they needed to change the file format (.docx, xlsx, etc.) with this version (also occurred with the current windows version)? The good news is that you can still open, and SAVE in the older formats (.doc, .xls, etc.) should you need/desire to.
I've never been a big MS Office fan and I have also grown rather fond of the new iWork suite by Apple. That said, Office 2008 delivers on it's promises, but it is still pretty much the same old office. Bottom line: If you liked the old office and are now running a newer Intel Mac, then you want to be running this version.

Microsoft Office for Mac is the worst software I've ever wasted my money on. I paid like $400 for it and it barely operates. It even crashes my $3000 macbook pro almost every time I use it. And good luck ever trying to compain to Microsoft. DO NOT BUY IT! If you really want it, "aquire" it by other means.

Two important features of Office for Mac 2008 that you'll probably never notice is that fact that it now runs natively on Intel Macs and that it's completely compatible with Office for Windows 2007. However I have to say that it took almost twice as long for the newer version of Word to open on my Intel iMac as did the 2004 version. Excel and Entourage opened at just about the same speed. I don't know about Outlook, because I don't use it.
The new Mac version interface is an awful lot like the ribbon interface on the Windows version and all those toolbars are now palettes which I like better. I don't know think this makes it any easier to use, but it's still very Mac like and now more closely resembles it's Windows cousin.
However, even though it's interface has been changed, Word for Mac 2008 isn't all that different from the 2004 version. At least not for most users, but if you are into creating fancy documents, then you're going to like this version, because it's got some nifty desktop publishing tools. If you want, you can be creating flyers and pages that look like they came from an expensive page layout program in no time at all.
And Excel for Mac 2008 has new tools for walking you through formulas and I just love Formula Builder. The Elements Gallery gives you lots of templates for common tasks, like figuring out your household budget for example.
All in all I'd have to say that this program is worth buying and if you already have the 2004 version I think the upgrade is worth it too.

I've been using Office for over a decade, and Office 2008 is a big change (for me) from the old menus and layout, but I was able to make the adjustment pretty well after using it for a while. I know Microsoft thinks they are helping people with these changes, but they have to take into consideration how many of us have been using Office forever, and maybe offer two different menu layouts: classic and new. Or something like that.
No problems with the install, and I haven't used all the tools yet, but all my existing documents and spreadsheets imported just fine, and I didn't lose any of my custom layouts.

As a Macintosh user for over 25 years i have very little care for Microsoft's Windows products and applications. However, this Office 2008 version for the Mac is excellent. A far improvement from previous productivity applications, even a good competitor to Apple's iWorks application bundle, given the bargain price I paid for Office. Kudos to Amazon's affiliates and partners for its speed delivery and processing.
