Apple are known for complaining that other manufacturers don't make MAC versions of their software, but then they go and create (or license development tools for) a MAC ONLY program that tries to compete with programs that ARE available for BOTH platforms.
This is a big improvement over iPhoto, where you get what you pay for. It's free and worth every penny. This program tries to make a big leap up to the big leagues to play with the same guys in the Photoshop league. FAIL. It's got some nice features that iPhoto SHOULD have had, but it's missing so much that for anyone serious about their photography and their ability to tweak and edit, this falls flat on it's face.
For anyone looking to have layers so they can use them in a 3D realm in a video composite, this can't even begin to do what is needed.
One wonders why a product like this was created to begin with. It's what iPhoto SHOULD have been, but hardly a useful tool for any but the most basic user.
PHotoShop its not, but easy and fun it is July 22, 2010

As a long time PhotoShop user I was a bit skeptical at first, but after getting used to the interface (which isn't that different from PShop,), I found this to a be a fast, fun and enjoyable program to use. Sometimes you don't need the big guns, and for most casual users this is likely to be the only photo manipulation program they will ever need. I've been told it's been improved over the last version-well all i can say is for a relatively early version, it seems pretty developed. It's very fast, especially with the filters and gradients. It's a Mac only program and feels in tune with the Mac experience and aesthetic. Although some reviewers have criticized it for looking "cartoony", I like the look of the interface. I would call it clever and slightly whimsical, which to my mind inspires creativity. I found my way around without having to dip into the manual very much, although the manual is (for once,) excellent. If you're familiar with PhotoShop you'll find your way around without a problem. While Pixelmator won't replace PhotoShop, it is much more than a toy. And when you consider the price it's a real winner.

I was finally able to install this program after deleting another similar one that I could never get to work. Everybody's comments are that these programs are so easy to use, etc. but as someone who is about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10 in Mac proficiency, I can't figure out how to use this Pixelmator! It looks like it should be awesome, but how am I supposed to get started. I loaded it and it took a while to figure out how to get a picture up from my iPhoto. Well I was so pleased with myself when I figured that out. Now that I pulled up a picture to try to work with, I don't even know where to start. I would love to just sit here for hours on end to try to do this, but I don't have that kind of time.
So if you are interested in further editing your pictures that what you can do in iPhoto, without a PhD in Mac software, I wouldn't recommend this. If you have tons of free time to figure out how to use this, then go for it. The one good thing I can say, is that this program is ONLY for the Mac OS. That is always better than something reconfigured from a Microsoft program.

Pixelmator is one of the many bastard children of digital imaging editing. Unfortunately, it is just an average piece of software with average results and I would rate it a "C". I work with image editing everyday for my website so tools of the platform and costs are my major concern. Pixelmator has only the average bells and whistles of your basic image editor: crop, resize, sharpen, color, etc. Its tools and the feel are very similar to that of Adobe Suite of photo editing. The problem with Pixelmator is that their are online image editing websites that will do the same thing, but for free. The software really doesn't distance itself from these cheaper and effective alternatives.

As a big user and proponent of Adobe Photoshop I can still say that it will not do everything. Sometimes more odd or unusual effects are needed, or perhaps you are just a casual photo editor who does not need the monster expense of Photoshop. Either way Pixelmator has you covered. It is cheap, easy to install, not difficult to learn, and it has wacky effects Photoshop does not. Also there are all the standard photo editing basics you would need as well. Grab a copy and use the filters. The kaleidoscope one is my favorite.
